Increasingly, commercial vehicles are equipped with automated vehicle (AV) features such as adaptive cruise control systems. The AV feature can automatically the headway between current and preceding in an manner. automatic may lead to significantly different car- following motions compared those of human-driven vehicles, which challenges applicability classic traffic flow theory emerging road AVs. To investigate impacts AVs on flow, this paper proposes a general methodology that combines both empirical experiments theoretical models construct fundamental diagram (FD), i.e., foundation for traffic. demonstrate experiment settings, we collected high-resolution trajectory data multiple one another platoon settings. field results revealed traditional triangular FD structure remains applicable describe characteristics Further, by comparing FDs it was found although shortest setting improve capacity, other settings decrease capacity existing human-driven-vehicle It also affect stability has been studies but first verified data. With these findings, mixed were derived incorporating penetration rates. method proposed paper, including designs, collection approaches, analyses, construction serve methodological studying future uncertain evolving technologies.
